Mother Tongue 

- The author Amy Tan discusses  many different things in her story "Mother Tongue". Talking about the adversities she faced within the language her mother spoke to the way she was tested in school,Adapting  to a new language and so on. However throughout the text Amy Tan mentioned a term that stood out upon reading it and trying to understand the meaning/definition of what the word emphasised on. "Broken English" 

- Ever since we began to attend primary school whether it would be in an international school or a public school where english  is deemed as a "Second Language" one thing that was certain is the method of teaching the english language! We (Students) were always taught one way of the language which was "Standard English". For those of you who aren't familiar with the terms that were mentioned here is a clearer picture. 

Standard English is deemed as "Formal English" one that respects the use of pronunciation and grammatical use of a sentence structure. The type of english that students would associate with in a classroom when speaking to the teacher. Similarly standard english is also the way a english or any academic teacher would use to communicate with the students. The Formal way of writing is also the way certain things are spelled. 

Broken English is deemed as the "Incorrect English" and is normally associated with people who are Non native. In the text "Mother tongue" Amy Tan uses the term broken english a lot in the text and i would like to discuss and share my views on the term of "Broken English" 

We see it almost everywhere, And it is discussed in almost every situation we are in. However i raise the question. " Why is nonnative english "Broken" if people understand it?" The reason i decided to ask this question as purely based off the reasoning behind it. In the perspective of Amy Tans mom her english isn't considered to be "Broken" because her daughter understands everything she is saying so is it considered broken?

The term broken english is made by the standard english perspective but that shouldn't really mean that the english that is spoken online is incorrect, Or the english that is spoken for instance in a ghetto is incorrect and heres why. If the way they are speaking is efficient in the understanding. So let's say that the word "Fam" or " Whip". The following terms aren't "Formal english" and would be classified as "Broken English" However if you use the following terms in a ghetto region in the Uk then it would make sense, So why is it concerned broken if people understand it. The point of a language is to try and communicate ideas and thoughts from one person to another, If the english that they are using gets the idea and gets the communication working then why do we classify it as broken?
